Abstract

This article reviews the Library of America's collection of the work from the 1950s and 1960s of American historian Richard Hofstadter, which he was arguably the nation's leading historian of the ideas and cultural currents in American society and politics during the period. It focuses on two seminal works in the collection, Anti-Intellectualism in American Life and The Paranoid Style in American Politics, which continue to resonate in contemporary times.
