Abstract
This encyclopedia entry looks at counterfeit goods, i.e. products that infringe upon the intellectual property rights of others through unauthorized use of trademarks, copyrights, patents, and related claims of ownership. The article describes different categories of counterfeit goods, produced and distributed under what the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development terms "secondary market" activity; that is, transactions in which both seller and buyer acknowledge the bogus nature of the items being proffered.
It examines the issues related to policing the illicit trade, including consumer acceptance of counterfeit goods as a rational value proposition. It concludes with strategies that intellectual property owners have adopted to combat product counterfeiting and piracy - beyond relying on legal enforcement, with varying success.
