Biographical Text

Eleanor Oakes is a photographic artist based in Detroit, MI. She is Assistant Professor of Photography at the College for Creative Studies, and was the founder of Darkroom Detroit, a non-profit that expands access to photography in Detroit. Her work has been featured internationally in numerous exhibitions and publications, including at Belle Isle Viewing Room (Detroit), Wasserman Projects (Detroit), Tyler Wood Gallery (New York, San Francisco), the University of the Notre Dame (Indiana), Simone de Sousa Gallery (Detroit), and Beyond Magazine (Germany), among others. She was an Applebaum Emerging Artist Resident at Ponyride (Detroit) where she completed the collaborative public art project "Graffiti Wanted" to include residents in an open dialogue about governmental censorship. She is also the recipient of awards including a 2023 Flourish Fund Grant from Culture Source and the Andy Warhol Foundation, and a Murphy and Cadogan Contemporary Art Award from the San Francisco Foundation.
